  • Loughborough Sikh Society 2009-2010

Posted on February 9th, 2009 admin No comments

Loughborough Sikh Society was founded in 2008 and as gone from strength to strength thanks to its members.
    What’s this all about?
The word ‘Sikh’ means ‘Learner’, a seeker of truth. Sikhism is recognised as being the 5th largest religion in the World. More importantly, it is a way of life that helps people on their individual journey through life. The aims of Loughborough Sikh Society are:

Providing a common ground for Sikhs across campus
We feel that it is important that all students feel comfortable at university and having something common around is always useful, especially in those first few weeks. The Sikh Society would provide anyone that comes to Loughborough with an initial place to meet other Sikhs (and non Sikhs that are in the Sikh Society). It all goes towards making the university feel more like home.

    Performing Seva (Selfless Service)
The Sikh Society aims to be actively involved in charitable events as well as organising its own.

Developing the knowledge and practice of the spiritual side of life
We aim to provide services to all those that wish, which will help a person to develop spiritually. To help with this we run regular Kundalini Yoga classes (Yoga of Awareness) for everyone.

    Encouraging Social Cohesion
Our objective is to enable people from all walks of life to understand each other. For this reason we aim to help in the education about various cultures and faiths. We help to achieve this through literature, joint events as well as interesting discussions on campus.

    Being Fun and Innovative
We do not want to be a society that just sits in the background and keeps to itself. As well as providing fun events for our members, we also want to have a noticeable, positive effect on Loughborough.

Some examples of events we have run or are due to run this year are:
    · Cha (Tea) and Somosa Party – To help everyone meet
    · Bhandi Chor Diwas (Diwali) celebration
    · Presentations on Sikh Dharma
    · Regular trips to the Gurdwara (Sikh Temple)
    · Kundalini Yoga Classes & general meditation techniques
    · Charity events and fund raising
    · Regular sports events like badminton and football
    · Paintballing
We are also looking at introducing:
    · Gatka (Sikh martial art) lessons
    · Interfaith and intrafaith discussion classes
    · Keertan (Hymns) by amateurs and professionals
    · Go-Karting

If you want to see something else introduced then please let us know and we’ll try and get it organised. Loughborough Sikh Society is here to serve you!
